The Invisalign® Treatment Process
Five Steps Toward a Straighter Smile
Choosing orthodontic treatment is an important decision. At Georgian Family Dentistry in Owen Sound, our team will guide you through the Invisalign process, from your first assessment to the steps needed to maintain your results.
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear aligners to move teeth gradually according to an individualized treatment plan.
Step 1: Book Your Initial Consultation
Your Invisalign journey starts with a dental consultation. We will discuss what you would like to change about your smile, assess your teeth and bite, and review your dental health. Your dentist will determine whether Invisalign is a suitable option or whether another treatment may better address your needs.
- Discuss your smile goals and concerns.
- Have your teeth and bite assessed.
- Learn about suitable treatment options.
- Ask questions about treatment, costs, and expected timelines.
Step 2: Develop Your Personalized Treatment Plan
If Invisalign is appropriate, your dentist will collect the necessary records to plan your treatment. These may include digital scans, photographs, and other diagnostic information. Your treatment plan will outline the intended tooth movements and provide an estimated timeline. Where available and appropriate, a digital simulation may help illustrate the anticipated changes to your smile. Every treatment plan is specific to the patient’s orthodontic needs.
Step 3: Receive Your Custom Aligners
Your aligners are made to fit your teeth and follow the prescribed sequence of movements. When you receive them, your dentist will explain how to insert, remove, clean, and store them. You will also be advised about daily wear time and when to move to the next aligner.
- Wear your aligners as instructed.
- Remove them for meals and oral hygiene.
- Keep your teeth and aligners clean.
- Store your aligners safely when they are not being worn.
- Contact your dentist if an aligner is damaged or does not fit as expected.
Step 4: Monitor Your Progress and Change Aligners as Directed
As you progress through your aligner series, scheduled visits allow your dentist to check your tooth movement and overall oral health. You will change to the next aligner according to your prescribed schedule. Some cases may require refinements or additional aligners to achieve the planned outcome. The number and timing of visits will depend on your individual treatment plan.
Step 5: Maintain Your Smile With Retainers
Once active orthodontic treatment is complete, your dentist will discuss how to maintain your new tooth positions. Retainers are generally recommended because teeth can shift after treatment. Wearing them as directed helps protect the progress you have made. Your dentist will explain the appropriate retainer type, wearing schedule, and follow-up care.
